About Agarfa in the Bale Zone of Oromia

Agarfa was the locale of the first of a series of Partners in the Horn of Africa (PiHA) projects. Ultimately the community would lead PiHA to build three foot bridges, a school, multiple libraries, community wells and water containment infrastructure projects. Inaugural Micro-finance, Anti-Malaria, AIDS education, sanitary pad supply, orphan support and school supply social support projects would also be inspired in Agarfa. The quality of life in Agarfa is much better than it was 23 years ago before the arrival of John Baigent and PiHA, but there is much need yet to be addressed.

The Agarfa woreda (aka district) is home to 156,000+ people named for its administrative center, the town of Agarfa. It is in a politically stable and food resilient area of southeast Ethiopia, located in the northwestern corner of the Bale Zone (aka area), which is part of the Oromia (Oromiya) Region (province/state). Other towns in Agarfa include Ali. The woreda is 420 km south east of the capital Addis Ababa and about an 8 hour drive.
